Cutting Tools for Aluminium Die Casting
Aluminium die-casting is one of the largest manufacturing segments around Chakan, and it places different demands on cutting tools than steel or cast-iron machining. High-silicon die-casting alloys are abrasive enough to wear out a standard carbide edge quickly, and aluminium's tendency to stick to the tool (built-up edge) at the wrong cutting speed or geometry directly affects surface finish. We supply the two tool families this work actually needs: PCD-tipped inserts for higher-volume or more abrasive work, and precision-ground, polished carbide inserts for lower-volume or less abrasive alloys.

Machining Challenges in This Segment
- High silicon content in common die-casting alloys causes rapid abrasive wear on standard carbide edges.
- Aluminium's tendency to form built-up edge at the wrong cutting speed or with the wrong insert geometry, which affects surface finish.
- Thin, sometimes porous wall sections in die-cast parts, which need a sharp, low-force cutting edge to avoid chipping or distortion.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What inserts work best for machining aluminium die-cast parts?
- PCD-tipped inserts for higher-volume or more abrasive (high-silicon) work, and precision-ground positive carbide inserts (CCGT, DCGT, TCGT, VCGT) for lower-volume work. See our PCD Inserts range.
- Why does aluminium build up on the cutting edge?
- Built-up edge happens when aluminium sticks to the tool at the wrong cutting speed or with an insert geometry that isn't sharp or polished enough. A positive-rake, polished insert designed for aluminium reduces this.
- Do you supply tooling for ADC12?
- Yes — our PCD and precision-ground carbide insert range is commonly used on ADC12 and similar die-casting alloys. Tell us your operation and we'll suggest a suitable option.
